Cinnamonitrile ( trans -3-phenylacrylic acid nitrile ) forms a yellowish liquid. It belongs to the aromatic group and is an unsaturated nitrile with a trans -substituted carbon-carbon double bond. The isomeric cis -cinnamonitrile is of little importance. The information in this article relates only to trans -cinnamonitrile.

Cinnamonitrile is obtained by dehydrating trans - cinnamic acid amide with thionyl chloride (SOCl 2 ) in dimethylformamide .
