Cinzio Passeri Aldobrandini (* 1551 or 1560 in Senigallia ; † January 1, 1610 in Rome ; also called Cinzio Aldobrandini Passeri ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church and papal legate of the Avignon exclave .

Origin and family

He was the son of Aurelio Personeni from a family that came from Cà Passero ( Bedulita ) near Bergamo , and Giulia Aldobrandini from the Florentine noble family of the Aldobrandini , sister of Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini , who later became Pope Clement VIII. His uncle gave him the surname Aldobrandini in 1585, even before his election as Pope .

Cinzio Passeri Aldobrandini was a cousin of Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini and the uncle of Cardinals Silvestro Aldobrandini and Ippolito Aldobrandini the Younger .

Life

He received his early education from his uncle, Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini. He later attended the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, studied law at the University of Perugia and received his doctorate from the University of Padua . In 1588 he accompanied his uncle to negotiations between Poland and the Habsburgs, he brought the news of the successful conclusion of the negotiations to Pope Sixtus V. In 1592 he became a trainee lawyer at the Apostolic Signature .

Aldobrandini was in the consistory of 17 September 1593 under a dispensation from the fact that his cousin also the College of Cardinals , belonged to Cardinal Deacon raised. He received the cardinal's hat on September 23, 1593; on October 11, 1593 he was awarded the title deaconry San Giorgio in Velabro .

With his cousin, Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini , he vied for the influential role of cardinal nepot . Cinzio was considered educated, intelligent and had been in the service of his uncle elected Pope in 1592 for several years. However, the politically more skilful Pietro Aldobrandini was able to oust him and perceived the more influential position within the curia .

Cinzio Passeri Aldobrandini participated in the conclave in March 1605 that Leo XI. elected to the Pope. Leo XI. appointed him major penitentiary , but Aldobrandini could not take up the office because he was not yet ordained a priest and the Pope died shortly afterwards. Aldobrandini was again among the cardinals of the conclave of May 1605 , from which Paul V emerged as Pope.

After he was ordained a priest - probably in 1605 - Pope Paul V appointed him major penitentiary, which Aldobrandini remained until his death. On June 1, 1605 he became a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Pietro in Vincoli .

He died in Rome and was buried in his titular church.

In addition to his charitable work, he distinguished himself as a sponsor of science and the arts. In his home he founded an academy which included Francesco Patrizio , Giambattista Raimondi , Scipione Pasquale , Pietro Nores and the poet Torquato Tasso ; the latter dedicated the famous verse epic La Gerusalemme liberata to him .

The Aldobrandini Wedding , an important Roman fresco painting, was named after him, the first owner.
