Cirilo José Jacob Valadares Cristóvão (born March 20, 1966 in Fuiloro , Portuguese Timor ; † October 20, 2019 in Denpasar , Bali , Indonesia ) was an East Timorese politician and member of the Congresso Nacional da Reconstrução Timorense (CNRT). From 2015 to 2017, Cristóvão was the country's defense minister .

Career

Cristóvão received a bachelor's degree in civil law from Udayana University in Bali , Indonesia .

From 1993 to 1994 he worked in the Indonesian civil service and was the head of the legal department of the district government of his native Lautém . He later headed the planning department there.

From 2000 to 2003, Cristóvão was a judge at the District Court of Dili . At the same time, he attended various courses on judges' training, international justice, domestic violence law and human rights. From 2002 until his death in October 2019, Cristóvão belonged to the Conselho Superior da Magistratura Judicial (CSMJ).

From 2003 to 2004, Cristóvão served on the board of directors of Timor Aid and the Peace and Democracy Foundation . From 2005 to 2008 he was one of the two chairmen of the Indonesian-East Timorese Truth and Friendship Commission , which was supposed to deal with the crimes of the crisis in East Timor in 1999 . The model was the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission . From August 27, 2007 to October 10, 2012, Cristóvão was a member of the State Council elected by the National Parliament .

From 2008 to 2009, Cristóvão was Chief Legal Advisor to Deputy Prime Minister José Luís Guterres before being appointed First Director General of the National Intelligence Service ( Serviço Nacional de Inteligência SNI) by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão in October 2009 . Cristóvão held the office until 2015.

2012 Cristóvão should be defense minister after Prime Minister Gusmão his first choice Maria Domingas Alves with President Taur Matan Ruak could not prevail. After several months of uncertainty, however, Prime Minister Gusmão finally took over the Ministry of Defense himself.

On February 16, 2015, under Prime Minister Rui Maria de Araújo , Cristóvão was finally sworn in as Minister of Defense. Since 2006 he was the first to lead the office independently. After the unrest in East Timor in 2006 , the ministry has always remained in the hands of the prime minister. When the VII government took office on September 15, 2017, Cristóvão handed over the ministerial office to José Agostinho Sequeira .

Cristóvão died on October 20, 2019 in the Bali Royal Hospital (BROS) in Bali.

family

Cirilo Cristóvão was married to Brígida Correia and had four children. He himself was the only son of Tomas José Cristóvão and Maria Madalena Cristóvão.
