Cisco Landing Store

Cisco is a ghost town in Grand County in the US state of Utah .

location

The city is located approximately 25 kilometers west of the state border with Colorado near Utah State Route 128 between Interstate 70 and the valley of the Colorado River . The altitude of the place is given as 4352 ft. (1326 meters). County Highway 175 runs through the village, via the south-branching County Highways 176 and 177 there are accesses to the Colorado River at Fish Ford and Cisco Landing, which are often used by rafters who have passed through the Westwater Canyon .

history

Unlike many other ghost towns in the western United States , no mining activity was a focus when Cisco was founded. Rather, the place was founded as a supply point as part of the construction of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad shortly after 1880. Due to its location, the place developed into a local center for ranchers in the area in the years to come, at times 100,000 sheep were sheared here a year, whose wool was shipped by rail. In 1924 oil and natural gas were found in the area , but this discovery could only delay the decline of the city, which had begun with the replacement of the steam locomotive . The importance of the town was still big enough in 1963 to be assigned the ZIP code 84515 by the United States Postal Service . The construction of Interstate 70 and the associated relocation of Highways 6 and 50 , which formerly crossed the village, resulted in Cisco becoming a ghost town. New oil and gas deposits were discovered in 2005, but this did not lead to new settlers.

tourism

Cisco is located on one of America's main tourist routes from Grand Junction / Colorado National Monument to Moab , Utah .

The easy accessibility meant that many buildings were destroyed by vandalism . Some buildings seem to be in use at least temporarily, and the local Cisco Landing Store is temporarily in operation. The California Zephyr uses the railway line operated today by the Union Pacific Railroad , but without a scheduled stop in Cisco, and freight trains of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad are also on the way.

Representation in the media

Johnny Cash composed the Cisco Clifton's Fillin Station song about Harry Ballard Harris, a Cisco resident.

Parts of the films Vanishing Point San Francisco (1971), Thelma and Louise (1991) and Don't come knocking (2005) were shot in Cisco and the immediate vicinity.
