City of McFarland (Original Title: McFarland, USA ) is an American sports drama directed by Niki Caro from 2015 and starring Kevin Costner based on real life. The film premiered in the United States on February 20, 2015. The cinema release in Germany was on June 18, 2015.

In 1987, PE teacher Jim White moved with his family to the remote Californian town of McFarland to start a new job at the local high school. The village is mainly inhabited by Hispanics , who often make a living as simple field workers. White recognizes the running talent of some of his students and decides to build a running team. His family is slowly starting to enjoy life in the small town, and friends and acquaintances organize a quinceanera for his daughter . After a few setbacks, the first successes are slowly emerging. Finally, the team succeeds in qualifying for the first Californian championships in cross-country skiing and can even decide for themselves.

criticism

The Germany Kultur thought the film argue "cheesy neither hypocritical nor but believable". Caro relies on “laconic humor and ironic charm” and avoids “cleverly hollow flag patriotism and sentimentality”. Here own McFarland surprisingly "the right atmospheric sense of an amazingly intelligent and also very entertaining Good-Feel-cinema".

The film won the Truly Moving Picture Award at the Heartland Film Festival 2015 .
