Civil War is a Swedish power metal band whose lyrics deal with historical topics. In 2012 it emerged largely from the Falun band Sabaton .

history

After Oskar Montelius, Rikard Sundén , Daniel Mullback and Daniel Mÿhr separated from the band Sabaton in 2012 , they founded the band Civil War together with Nils Patrik Johansson , who is also the singer of Astral Doors . Stefan Eriksson was used as bass player. The name "Civil War" was an idea of ​​Johansson, who also wrote all the lyrics and composed most of the music.

Shortly after the founding, they signed a record deal with Despotz Records . In October 2012 the first EP Civil War was released.

After the release, work began on the first album The Killer Angels , which was released in June 2013 after several singles ( I Will Rule the Universe , Saint Patrick's Day and First to Fight ). The album sold over 20,000 times in Sweden by November 2013 and thus achieved gold status in the band's homeland.

In February 2014 a European tour began and guitarist Petrus Granar joined the band as the seventh member. At the same time a contract was signed with the Napalm Records label , under which the album Gods and Generals was released in 2015 . Shortly afterwards Oskar Montelius and Stefan Eriksson left the band.

On November 4, 2016, the third album The Last Full Measure was released . A short time later, the band surprisingly announced the departure of the singer Nils Patrik Johansson. Kelly Sundown was introduced as the new singer, who had already made a name for himself as a singer for, among others, Adagio , Beyond Twilight , Outworld and as a tour singer for Firewind .

style

While Sabaton has focused exclusively on military history topics since Primo Victoria , with a few exceptions, Civil War focuses on other historical topics, examples are Schindler's Ark , St. Patrick's Day , Tombstone and Gangs of New York . The band sees itself as an underground band. Keyboardist Daniel Mÿhr describes Civil War as a mixture of "a little Sabaton and a little DIO".
