Cladonia uncialis , known as hedgehog cladonia in German, is a shrub lichen that forms pale yellow to gray-greenish, hedgehog-like cushions or prickly lawns. It is characteristic of nutrient-poor soils.
description
The stem-round and hollow stems ( Podetien ) of the hedgehog cladonia are multiple, but overall sparsely and regularly forked. Their surfaces have neither leaflets nor scales. The brownish twig ends are not or only slightly curved and sharply pointed. The stems are 3 to 5 centimeters high and about 2 millimeters thick. They are very close together and form prickly lawns or hedgehog-like cushions. The lichens do not form indigenous leaflets and rarely develop fruiting bodies ( apothecia ).
Distribution and location
The hedgehog cladonia is widespread from the Arctic to the deciduous deciduous forest zone. It grows mainly on acidic, nutrient-poor sandy soils or on rocky subsoil. It settles on dry grassland , dwarf shrub heaths , open forests and rubble heaps from the lowlands to high alpine regions .
