Ferdinand Břetislav Mikovec (born December 14, 1826 in Sloup v Čechách , † September 22, 1862 in Prague ) was a Czech theater critic and theorist.

Live and act

Ferdinand Břetislav Mikovec was born in 1826 as the son of the administrator of the Burgstein manor in Berka Castle below the Sloup Castle . After attending grammar school in Bohemian Leipa , he went to Prague in 1842 and studied philosophy.

Although he was raised in a German environment, he became more and more interested in Czech history and the patriotic movement of the Czechs. In 1848 he took an active part in the Slavs Congress and, after the Prague uprising, fled with other leaders of the movement via Vienna to Zagreb .

Mikovec fought to raise the level of Czech theater and published plays and lyrical works.

In 1850 he returned to Prague and on February 6, 1851 published the first issue of Lumír magazine. Later he was one of the committee members for the construction of the National Theater in Prague . In 1862 he died of heart failure.
