Rudolf Josef Müller (born December 28, 1816 in Reichenberg , Northern Bohemia ; † March 6, 1904 there ) was a Bohemian history painter , art writer and drawing teacher .

Life

Born in Reichenberg, Rudolf Müller, son of a cloth maker , studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague , in 1835 he switched to his sponsor Joseph von Führich at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna . Rudolf Müller then continued his education on study trips to Italy , Munich and Dresden . In 1838 he moved to Prague, where he took up a position as a proofreader at the art academy, and from 1846 he worked as a freelance history and portrait painter . In 1872 Müller accepted a position as a drawing teacher at the state middle school in Reichenberg. In addition, in Reichenberg he was committed to promoting industrial and craft development. In his function as a member of a kk central commission, Müller also campaigned for the preservation of art and monuments . Rudolf Müller died in March 1904 at the age of 87 in his home town of Reichenberg.

The artistic work of Müller, influenced by Peter von Cornelius , was initially committed to romantic historicism . In the later phase it approached realism , which was particularly evident in portraiture. Müller's work includes numerous altar paintings in the Salzburg Cathedral (including the high altar painting The Resurrection of Christ , 1859) as well as several portraits of Emperor Franz Joseph . Rudolf Müller also wrote around 80 biographies on German artists in Bohemia for the biographical reference work Die Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie .
