Clara Butt
Dame Clara Ellen Butt , DBE (born February 1, 1872 in Southwick near Brighton , † January 23, 1936 in North Stoke , Oxfordshire ) was a British singer ( alto ).
Life
She made her debut at the Royal Albert Hall (London) in Sir Arthur Sullivan's The Golden Legend . She recorded several gramophone records , often with the pianist Lillian Bryant . Agnes Elisabeth Overbeck also accompanied her on the piano before 1904.
In 1900 she married the baritone Kennerley Rumford . Clara Butt has sung at many important festivals and concerts and has been honored with royal awards by Queen Victoria , Edward VII and George V.
For charitable services in World War I , she was raised to the nobility in 1920 as Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) .
She developed spinal cancer in the 1920s , but continued to work as much as possible. For many of her later recordings, she was in a wheelchair .
Clara Butt died at the age of 63.
