Clara Furse

Dame Clara Furse DBE (* 1957 in Montreal , Canada ) became the first female managing director of one of the largest and oldest stock exchanges in Europe, the London Stock Exchange , in 2001 . She is married and has three children.

Career

Clara Furse was born in Canada to Dutch parents and grew up speaking five languages ​​in Colombia , Denmark and England .
After studying economics at the London School of Economics ( LSE ), she began her career as a securities dealer at "Heinold Commodities Ltd." in London.
In 1983 Furse switched to "Phillips & Drew". Two years later she became director of the company and it merged with the “Union Bank of Switzerland” to form today's UBS , where she worked for 15 years as “Director”, “Executive Director”, “Managing Director” and “Global Head of Futures”.
In 1998, Furse took over as CEO of the major French bank "Credit Lyonnaise Rouse". From 1992 to 1999 she was Deputy Chairwoman of the London International Financial Futures and Option Exchange (LIFFE), now Euronext . In December 2000, Furse left LIFFE and in February 2001 became the first female director of the London Stock Exchange (LSE). It was supposed to bring the “LSE” forward again after the takeover by Deutsche Börse AG in 2000 had failed. In 2005, renewed negotiations with Deutsche Börse failed, so that criticism of Clara Furse increased. Under her leadership, LSE and Borsa Italiana SpA merged in 2007 through a share swap worth 1.878 billion euros.

In 2005 it was ranked 19th by Fortune magazine in the category: Most powerful women in business . In 2007, she was among the Top 100 Most Influential People in The World , according to Time magazine statistics . In the same year Furse reached sixth place in a ranking of the "Wall Street Journal" in The Top Women in Business .
