Claridge's Hotel, London

history

Claridge's - or at least the building - came into being 200 years ago when James Mivart founded a small guesthouse called Mivart's Hotel at 49 Brook Street in 1812 . After the fallout of the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 , he entertained royal guests on his humble Estaminet .

In 1854 James Mivart sold the business to William and Marianne Claridge , who owned the houses that led to the corner of Davies Street: "Claridge's, late Mivart's" was born - a cumbersome construction that was soon shortened. After the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840, London became a haven for official visits from the kings of the world, and many came to Claridge.

Restaurant and bar

In 2014, Claridge replaced Gordon Ramsay's restaurant with Fera - a Michelin-starred restaurant that closed in late 2018. In November 2019, Daniel Humm , head of New York restaurants Eleven Madison Park and NoMad , will take over the management of Claridge's Restaurant. Eleven Madison Park used to be number 1 on the World's 50 Best Restaurants , so this is expected to be a huge win for Claridge's.

Claridge's offers afternoon tea and is recommended by the Tea Guild . It has two bars on the ground floor: a main bar and a former cigar bar called The Fumoir . The smoking ban in England has resulted in The Fumoir ceasing to sell cigars .

Christmas

Every year a Christmas tree is set up and creatively decorated in the hotel by a fashion designer. Designers such as John Galliano , Dolce & Gabbana , Karl Lagerfeld and Diane von Fürstenberg have so far participated.
