Claude Abravanel

Claude Abravanel (born July 16, 1924 in Montreux , Canton of Vaud , Switzerland ; † December 14, 2012 ) was an Israeli pianist , musicologist and composer of Swiss origin.

Life

Claude Abravanel's father was a pharmacist, his mother a singer, whom he accompanied on the piano from an early age. First studied piano with Pierre Souvarain (1911–2000) at the Conservatory in Bern. From 1944 to 1948 he studied piano with Dinu Lipatti at the Conservatoire de musique de Genève and from 1948 to 1951 he studied composition with Arthur Honegger and piano with Yvonne Lefébure at the École Normale de Musique de Paris . In 1951 he emigrated to Israel and was a lecturer in music theory , harmony and counterpoint at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance from 1952 to 1992 . In 1958 he founded a music library within the academy, which he headed until 1992. In 1965 he was appointed director of the Academy's Musical Instrument Museum, and in 1988 he established an archive for Israeli music. He headed these two institutions until 2004. From 1994, he worked as a volunteer in the music department of the National Library of Israel as an archivist.

Abravanel wrote musicological articles for various magazines and was a member of the Israel's Composer's League , ACUM , the Israeli music collecting society , and the Israel Musicological Society . He had three children with his wife, Sara Treves.
