Marc'Antonio Ziani
Marc'Antonio Ziani (* around 1653 in Venice ; † January 22, 1715 in Vienna ) was an Italian composer .
Life
Ziani was a nephew of the composer and organist Pietro Andrea Ziani . Initially a singer at San Marco , in 1677 he applied in vain to succeed his uncle as first organist. In 1679 he appeared for the first time as an opera composer with Alessandro Magno in Sidone . In 1686 he became Kapellmeister in Mantua , but still stayed frequently in Venice. In the 1690s he was able to celebrate great successes with his operas. In 1700 he was appointed Vice Kapellmeister Leopold I in Vienna ; under his son Charles VI. he rose in 1712 to court conductor .
Ziani was married twice and had three daughters; a son-in-law was the theater engineer and architect Antonio Beduzzi . Ziani's successor as Hofkapellmeister in Vienna was Johann Joseph Fux .
Works
Ziani wrote exclusively vocal music , including around 45 operas, 16 oratorios , around 15 masses and over 100 other sacred works . His style is versatile and contrapuntal . Instrumental passages are often expanded widely, with the composer using the instrumentation to achieve unusual effects.
