Claude Deruet
Claude Deruet (* about 1588 , † 1660 ) was a Lorraine painter of the Baroque .
Life
Deruet was a student of Jacques Bellange , the court painter of Duke Charles III. of Lorraine. He stayed in Rome from around 1612 to 1619 , where, according to André Félibien (1685), he studied with Antonio Tempesta . Archival documents show that he also painted frescoes in the Casino Montalto of Villa Lante in Bagnaia as an assistant to Giuseppe Cesari . In Rome in 1615 he portrayed the samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga, who was in Europe, and frescoed the private chapel of Scipione Caffarelli Borghese in the Villa Borghese on the Pincio . The Rome-based engraver and graphics publisher Philippe Thomassin made various prints based on preliminary drawings by Deruet. One of the most important surviving paintings by Deruet from the time after his return to Lorraine is the painting Rape of the Sabine Women , which is now in the Alte Pinakothek of the Bavarian State Painting Collections .
In 1621 Deruet was raised to the nobility by Duke Heinrich II of Lorraine . In 1625 Claude Lorrain was Deruet's pupil for a year. Deruet's high reputation is expressed, among other things, in the fact that the French King Louis XIII. and the Queen resided in his house throughout her visit to Nancy in 1633. In 1645 the French king knighted him in the Order of Michael . The surviving inventory of Deruet's estate shows that he owned an extensive art collection. Jacques Callot engraved a portrait of Deruet; the handwritten preliminary drawing has been preserved in the Louvre.
