Claus-Peter Schnorr
Claus-Peter Schnorr (born August 4, 1943 in Völklingen near Saarbrücken ) is a German mathematician and computer scientist .
Life
Schnorr studied mathematics and physics at the University of Saarbrücken from 1962 to 1966 . His diploma thesis is entitled Investigations of context-free languages according to algebraic aspects . Claus P. Schnorr his doctorate in 1967 at the Department of Günter Hotz Dr. rer. nat., the dissertation is entitled Representability of Languages by Free Associative Systems . He completed his habilitation in mathematics in 1970. The work Randomness and Probability provides an algorithmic foundation for the theory of probability .
Schnorr became a lecturer in Saarbrücken in 1970 , an associate professor at the University of Erlangen in 1971 , and a year later he switched to the mathematics department of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Since 1986 he has also been a professor at the Department of Computer Science (Chair of Mathematical Computer Science) in Frankfurt. Both departments were later merged. Schnorr retired in 2011 after 40 years at the University of Frankfurt. He is married and has 3 children.
In the 1970s, Schnorr researched primarily in the field of complexity theory . In the 1980s he dealt with algorithmic aspects of lattice base reduction and recognized the importance of cryptography early on . He took part in the EUROCRYPT conference at Feuerstein Castle in 1982 and is now one of the most famous German cryptographers. He developed an identification scheme based on the discrete logarithm (1989/91), whose signature variant (" Schnorr signature ") is used worldwide today. The process was patented by Schnorr and licensed exclusively to RSA (Siemens had a non-exclusive license). The patent protection period has now expired. As part of the IEEE P1363 standardization, Schnorr accused NIST of violating its patent with the Digital Signature Algorithm , or DSA for short, developed by the NIST .
He is a Distinguished Associate at RSA Laboratories and a visiting professor at well-known universities ( Stanford University , University of California, Berkeley , ENS Paris , University of Chicago ). In 1993 the German Research Foundation awarded his work with the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (together with Johannes Buchmann ).
