Claus Böning

Claus Böning (* 1954 ) is a German physicist and oceanographer .

Scientific career

Claus Böning, in 1973 his school days with the High School and began then, after his community service , in 1974 the study of physics at the Technical University of Braunschweig and the University of Kiel . From 1976 to 1980 he studied oceanography in Kiel and graduated with a diploma . In 1984 he obtained a doctorate in the field of oceanography. From 1980 to 1985 he was a research assistant in the special research area 133 at the University of Kiel. Between 1985 and 1987 he was part of the research team at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Princeton University , USA . From 1987 to 1993 Claus Böning worked as a university assistant at the Institute for Oceanography at the University of Kiel. In 1993 he was a scientist visiting the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Boulder , Colorado , USA. From 1993 to 1996 he worked as a senior assistant at the Institute for Oceanography at Kiel University. In 1996 he became professor for ocean physics at the Alfred Wegener Institute Bremerhaven / University of Bremen and since 1998 he has been professor for theoretical oceanography at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. From 2001 to 2003 he was head of the research area “Ocean Circulation and Climate” at the Institute for Oceanography and since 2002 spokesman for the SFB 460 at the University of Kiel. Since 2004 he has been deputy head of the research area "Ocean Circulation and Climate Dynamics" at IFM-GEOMAR .
