Claus Becker (born August 15, 1900 in Oberkirchen , today Freisen ; † April 18, 1965 in Saarbrücken ) was a German journalist and editor-in-chief of the Saarbrücker Zeitung .

Life

After high school, Claus Becker first completed a commercial apprenticeship. From 1928 he worked as a journalist and aggressively dealt with National Socialism and took part in the voting campaign on the Saar . Like many Saarlanders in his situation at the time, he continued to seek confrontation with fascism and went to Spain in 1936.

In December of the same year he became the first commander of the 8th International Chapayev Battalion , which was part of the XIII. International Brigade was incorporated and was mainly used on the southern front. Important stations were the skirmishes at Motril and Pitres in the province of Granada and the battle at Pozoblanco . The battalion also witnessed the Málaga massacre , in which the German Condor Legion and two warships fired at the fleeing civilian population. Thousands of people were killed.

In 1946 he returned to the Saar region, where he was appointed district administrator by the French military government. He was a co-founder and board member of MRS , which campaigned for the Saarland to become part of France. During this time he held the post of editor-in-chief of the MRS organ “The New Week”. From 1955 to 1957 he was editor-in-chief of the "Saarbrücker Zeitung". In 1960 he participated in the founding of the Saarland People's Party and was also a member of its regional executive committee. In the same year he was elected to the Saarland state parliament , to which he was a member until 1965.
