Claus Martin
Claus Martin (* 1967 in Hanau ) is a German director , librettist and musical composer .
Life
Claus Martin studied directing at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater with Götz Friedrich . During his studies, he wrote his first libretto ( Yvonne ) and made his debut as an opera director at the Theater der Stadt Zwickau .
After a few years as assistant director (among others with Renate Ackermann , Johannes Schaaf and Jérôme Savary ) and productions a. a. in 2001 in Dresden, Hamburg and Berlin he became artistic director of the Ensemble Oper an der Leine in Hanover. There he staged numerous works, in particular from contemporary music theater (including by William Walton , Gian Carlo Menotti and Viktor Ullmann ) and the German premiere of Peter Maxwell Davies ' opera Mr. Emmett takes a walk .
His staging of the world premiere of the opera La Quintrala by the Danish composer Lars Graugaard in Copenhagen attracted particular attention .
Since 2005 he has directed the Opera Ensemble Contemporary Opera Rhein-Main in Frankfurt. However, he is also active outside of this ensemble as a guest director (mainly in the field of musical and contemporary music) and staged world premieres of other stage works, including a. by Fried Walter and Thomas Gabriel .
In addition to his work as a director, Martin composes musicals on his own libretti, including pieces for young audiences ( Heidi , Pinocchio ). While the two early pieces Yvonne and Königsmörderst one kisses do not have an emphatically chamber play-like structure, the musicals from 2004 onwards are pieces for large ensembles, which are therefore mostly performed on open-air stages.
His staging of Vanity Fair at the Coesfeld open-air stage won the Amarena Award for best open-air production in 2009/10 .
In 2015 he directed the short film "Erledigt", which was awarded numerous international prizes. a. with the audience award and the jury award at the Bielefeld picture quake
