Lars Graugaard (* 1957 in Odense ) is a Danish composer and flautist.

Lars Graugaard studied flute at the Royal Music Academy in Copenhagen . He is married to the harpist Sofia Asunción Claro.

Artistic career

In 1982 he made his first appearance as a composer for chamber music (“Fantasia” for flute and harp), many other compositions of all genres followed. He also performed his compositions as an interpreter on the flute in the field of jazz with Christian Sievert, Hugo Rasmussen and Bjarne Rostvold and Jukka Tolonen , Bo Stief and Alex Riel ( Kvartetten , Smile ).

During his studies he began to deal intensively with the tonal possibilities of electronic music . Since the early 1990s he developed his concept of “interactive music”, in which an instrumentalist “interacts” with a computer . The basic idea is that the sounds that the musician plays live on his instrument are recorded and "processed" by the computer. The type and manner of this processing (for example, distortion, decomposition into sound spectra ) is determined by the composer using a computer program. The sounds processed in this way are made audible for the playing musician (and the audience) almost at the same time through loudspeakers, so that the audible impression is created that the computer is “accompanying” the musician. However, it is this itself that triggers the sounds of the computer through its played sounds and thereby "interacts" with the computer. Graugaard composed numerous works for chamber ensembles and orchestras in which he experimented with this technique. His first “interactive opera” for singers and interactive computers, “Die Flucht”, based on motifs by Hans Christian Andersen , premiered in 2002 in Odense . His second opera “La Quintrala” received international attention in 2004 and was performed with European Union funds under the direction of Claus Martin in Copenhagen , Piteå , Hanover and Berlin .

Graugaard is one of the most played living composers in Denmark, his works have already been performed on every continent. As an improvisation musician, he worked in a duo with Jean-Michel Pilc , Keisuke Matsuno and Moritz Baumgärtner .
