politics

On September 24, 2018, he announced his candidacy for the mayoral election in Rostock in 2019 as a non-party individual applicant. However, he was supported by the FDP and CDU and, for the runoff election, by the Rostock electoral alliance UFR, to which the previous mayor Roland Methling also belongs. In the first round of the mayoral election in Rostock, he achieved 34.6% of the vote and thus entered the runoff election against Steffen Bockhahn from the Die Linke party . He won this election on June 16, 2019 with 57.1% of the votes cast, making him the first foreign mayor of a major German city . The NDR filmed a documentary about the first 100 days as Lord Mayor.

The swearing-in took place on August 28, 2019 in the Rostock citizenship.

criticism

Trade unions, Jusos and left-wing youth Solid strongly criticize Madsen because of his company's internal wage policy. This refuses to pay collective wages and even pays several hundred euros less than the usual collective wage to his employees. These statements led to public protests by employees, who justified this by saying that they would receive other perks. According to its own information, Madsen pays its employees 4% above the collective wage. Madsen also rejects works councils who, in his opinion, need "nobody".
