Cleistocactus morawetzianus is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors Victor Morawetz from New York, a patron of Curt Backeberg .
description
Cleistocactus morawetzianus grows shrubby to almost tree-shaped with richly branched, gray-green shoots and reaches heights of up to 2 meters with diameters of up to 5 centimeters. There are 12 to 16 transversely furrowed ribs . The areoles on it are up to 1 centimeter apart. The thorns, which are thickened at the base, are initially golden yellow, later turn grayish with a darker tip. The mostly three awl central spines are up to 5 centimeters long. The up to 14 radial spines are up to 15 millimeters long.
The protruding, straight or slightly bent and downward-facing flowers above the pericarpel are white or have a light greenish or slightly pinkish tinge. They are up to 5.5 centimeters long and have a diameter of 9 millimeters. The bracts are spread out. The stylus protrudes far beyond the flower. The spherical fruits are yellowish green.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Cleistocactus morawetzianus is distributed in the Peruvian regions of Junín , Huancavelica , Ayacucho and Apurímac at altitudes of 2000 to 2500 meters. It was first described in 1936 by Curt Backeberg .
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
