Cleistocactus serpens is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet serpens means 'creeping'.

description

Cleistocactus serpens grows shrubby with few branched, initially upright, later prostrate to ascending, green shoots and reaches heights of up to 2 meters with a diameter of 5 to 7 centimeters. There are 9 to 11 rounded, slightly humped and V-shaped ribs . The areoles are about 1 centimeter apart. The 10 to 20 thorns are brown to gray and have a brown tip. The central spine, which can also be absent, sometimes there are up to two, is subpulate, protruding and 2 to 6 centimeters long. On flowering shoots it can hardly be distinguished from the awl to needle-like or bristly, 0.5 to 1.5 centimeter long radial spines.

The mostly crooked, raspberry-red flowers appear laterally near the shoot tips. They are 5 to 7 centimeters long and have a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are loosely covered with brown wool. The spherical, greenish yellow fruits reach a diameter of 2 to 3 centimeters.

Distribution and systematics

Cleistocactus serpens is common in the Peruvian regions of Piura and Lambayeque . It was first described as Cactus serpens in 1823 by Karl Sigismund Kunth . Robert Roland-Gosselin placed them in the genus Cleistocactus in 1904 .
