De Maizière is the name of a Prussian - Huguenot family who came from France in the 17th century and settled in the Electorate of Brandenburg . In 1685 she fled France from persecution of the Huguenots.

The family name comes from Maizières-lès-Metz from the Moselle department in Lorraine . Members of the family lived in Paris at least since Bartholomew's Night in 1572 and a De Maizière is said to have been King Henry IV's personal physician . The family crest bears a black leaping lion on a silver background.

Ernst de Maizière had the family name changed from Maizier to de Maiziere in August 1896 after he had been able to prove the direct line of descent until 1570 .
