Clementa C. Pinckney

Clementa Carlos Pinckney (born July 30, 1973 in Beaufort , South Carolina , † June 17, 2015 in Charleston , South Carolina) was an American Methodist ( African Methodist Episcopal Church ) cleric and politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1997 to 2000 , and was then a Senator in the South Carolina Senate from 2001 until his death .

Life

Pinckney attended a public school in Jasper County . He studied at Allen University in Columbia , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in business administration in 1995 . He then continued his studies at the University of South Carolina , where he received a Master of Public Administration in 1999 .

Furthermore, Pinckney, who has been active in the church since his youth, studied at the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, South Carolina, where he graduated in 2008 with a Master of Divinity . Pinckney was pastor of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.

In 1996 he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. He took up his mandate there in 1997 and held it until 2000 when he was elected to the South Carolina Senate.

On June 17, 2015, he and eight people were shot dead by a 21-year-old white man in the 2015 Charleston attack at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, where he was parish priest. In the by-election resulting from his death in October 2015, his party colleague Margie Bright Matthews was elected.

Pinckney was married and had two daughters.
