Cleota Gage Fry

Cleota Gage Fry (born December 30, 1910 in Shoshone , Idaho , † July 1, 2001 in Lafayette (Indiana) ) was an American mathematician , physicist and university professor .

Life and research

Gage Fry was the oldest of four children and received her elementary school education in Portland, Oregon , where she graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1929. She then attended Reed College , where she received her bachelor's degree in physics in 1933 . In 1936 she received her master's degree from Purdue University, where she received her PhD in mathematics with a minor in physics under Howard Kibble Hughes in 1939 . The title of her dissertation was: Asymptotic Developments Of Certain Integral Functions. From 1939 until her retirement, she taught math and physics at various times at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana . Until 1940 she was assistant teacher of mathematics, until 1945 lecturer in physics, until 1947 trainer, until 1955 assistant professor and until 1977 associate professor. From 1952 to 1961 she was also the assistant to the dean at the School of Science. In 1952 she was co-author of a college math textbook. Reed College received funding from her estate for a Cleota Gage Fry needs-based grant.
