history

The Estadio Elías Aguirre

The Club Juan Aurich de Chiclayo was founded on September 3, 1922 by some men in Chiclayo . These gentlemen were mostly workers on the estate of a landlord in Chiclayo. The landlord on whose estate the new association was founded was called Juan Aurich. Based on him, the club was named Club Juan Aurich de Chiclayo. The club colors of the new club were set to red and white and a sports field in Chiclayo was chosen as the venue. In the course of time, Juan Aurich's venue grew noticeably, in 1970 a larger stadium was built for the club, the Estadio Elías Aguirre , which today offers space for 25,000 spectators.

Club Juan Aurich de Chiclayo won its first city championship in Chiclayo in 1933. The title win should also remain the only one in this competition, as this was soon abolished. For the first time in the Primera División , the top division in Peruvian football, Juan Aurich rose in 1966. In the 1967 season they finished ninth, while today's record champions Universitario de Deportes secured the championship. The following year was Juan Aurich's most successful so far. In the Peruvian league they finished second behind Sporting Cristal and only missed the first championship in the club's history after a play-off, as they had both points and goals that ended 1: 2. The club from Chiclayo has not been able to achieve such a success until today, but it has often achieved a top rank. After cooperating with private investors in the nineties and they got into economic problem situations, the club had to be relegated from the Primera División in 1995 and threatened to sink there. By winning the Copa Perú in 1997 by beating Deportivo UPAO Trujillo in the final , only two years after relegation, they were promoted to the top division again. But only a few years later Juan Aurich got into economic difficulties again and descended again. Only in 2007 could the rise again be celebrated by winning the Copa Perú. In the more recent past, Juan Aurich has managed more and more to build on the successful time at the end of the nineteen-sixties. In 2009 they finished third in the Primera División and qualified for the Copa Libertadores for the second time . At the tournament the following year, Juan Aurich reached the second round, where they finished third in Group 3 behind Estudiantes de La Plata and Alianza Lima and were eliminated. At the first Libertadores participation in 1969, however, Juan Aurich was eliminated in the first round in a group with Universidad Católica , the Santiago Wanderers and Sporting Cristal from bottom of the table.
