Clyde Samuel Kilby
Clyde Samuel Kilby (born September 26, 1902 in Johnson City , † October 18, 1986 in Columbus ) was an American English student .
Life
Kilby's parents, James Lafayette and Sophronia Kilby, lived on the Nolichuckey River in the northern part of East Tennessee's hill country. The youngest of eight children, he was the first of his family to graduate from college. While studying at the University of Arkansas , he worked part-time in the registrar of nearby John Brown University . Clyde graduated in 1929 and the next year married Martha Harris, a math teacher at JBU. They moved to Minnesota, where Kilby received his Masters from the University of Minnesota in 1931 .
In 1935 Kilby moved to Wheaton , where he became an assistant professor of English. In 1938 he received his Ph.D. through correspondence at New York University . He became chairman of the English department at Wheaton in 1951, a position he held until 1966. He retired from teaching in Wheaton in 1981 and moved to Columbus, his wife's hometown, where he died on October 18, 1986.
He was honored with the Clyde S. Kilby Prize for Inkling Studies (a major winner is Colin Duriez ) and the Clyde S. Kilby Research Fellowship ( winner is Diana Pavlac Glyer ). There is a Clyde S. Kilby Chair at Wheaton College (currently Christina Bieber Lake ).
