The two German illustrators and designers Mark Landwehr and Sven Waschk publish their artistic work in the areas of character design and designer toys under the name Coarse ( English for coarse , rough ) .

history

Landwehr did not enjoy any classical artistic training, but began his work in the field of illustration under the name Coarse as an autodidact . In 2003 he converted his illustrations from the field of character design into three-dimensional sculptures and made them first in Hamburg and later in Hong Kong . As early as 2004, the US sports shoe manufacturer Vans became aware of Landwehr's Designer Toys, especially his series of sculptures “Flake and Fluid”. These are stylized sculptures made of fiberglass and synthetic resin , some of which are life-size depicting two melancholy looking young men, dressed in streetwear from the skateboarding and surfing scene and bared torsos. A resulting cooperation with Vans gave Coarse international attention early on. In 2008, the Hanover- born, studied communications designer, Waschk Landwehr, joined and in 2013 they both moved to Los Angeles , where they have since run their own studio and gallery under the common name Coarse. In addition to working with Vans, Coarse has entered into numerous collaborations with very different partners, including the IKEA furniture company , for whom Coarse designed a designer toy. In 2014, Coarse worked with Amnesty International on a charity project for which a series of "freedom candles" were developed, which initially represented symbols of oppression but when burned revealed symbols of hope.

Coarse's work runs through “the duo's characteristic sculptural style with sharp edges and smooth lines, which gives the figures a kind of uncanny CGI quality.” In addition to the human and exclusively male figures, Coarse repeatedly publishes anthropomorphic sculptures, including owls and raccoons and fish. In terms of motifs, the duo concentrates on "narrative sculptures that tell stories about sexual identity , fear of transience and relationships that break apart."
