Codophila varia is a Wanzenart from the family of stink bugs (Pentatomidae).

features

The 8.7 to 14 millimeter long bugs are very variable in color. The color spectrum ranges from light yellow and gray to orange to blood red. The bugs have a pointed head with three light vertical stripes. The front edge of the pronotum is slightly curved inwards. There is a striking black mark on the light-colored label (scutellum). The connexive (part of the abdomen visible on the side) is light with black spots. The first three antennae are usually red, the two outer ones black.

distribution

The species occurs in the western Palearctic . It is widespread in the Mediterranean area, but absent in Central Europe.

Way of life

Codophila varia is a polyphagous species of bug. They are often found on Asteraceae and umbelliferae (Apiaceae). Their host and fodder plants include man litter ( Eryngium ), thyme , true hogweed ( Acanthus mollis ), cumin ( bunium ) and carrots ( Daucus ).

Similar species

Codophila varia and Carpocoris pudicus look very similar. The shape and color of the front edge of the pronotum are named as a distinguishing feature. Another characteristic that distinguishes Codophila varia from the Carpocoris species is the shape of the lower end of the corium .
