Coelonia fulvinotata is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of moth (Sphingidae).

features

The moths have a fore wing length of 43 to 64 millimeters. The body and forewings are brown and have a black pattern. There are two pink spots at the rear end of the thorax . The abdomen has yellow spots on the sides. In the males, the forewings have a white, irregular line roughly between the two outer thirds. The females have a blurred white spot behind this line below the wing tip. The hind wings are dark brown and have a yellow spot at the base. The males have a hairy scent organ at the base of the forelegs, which, however , cannot be clearly recognized without moving the scales to one side. The species has a certain resemblance to the skull hawk ( Acherontia atropos ), but has less yellow on the abdomen and on the hind wings. It also lacks the skull drawing on the thorax that is typical of the similar species. The proboscis is very long.

The caterpillars have a variable body color. They are either green or yellow-green with purple diagonal stripes on the sides, or light to dark brown and then covered with white and darker brown spots. The three thoracic segments on the back are yellowish, arched and provided with warty outgrowths. The long anal horn is curved and warty. The brown color variant looks similar to an equally colored variant of the skull hawk caterpillar, but is slimmer and has a differently shaped anal horn. The doll has a curved trunk sheath.

distribution and habitat

The species is distributed in large parts of Africa and also on Madagascar and Mauritius . It colonizes bushy habitats.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars, like the similar skull and crossbones, feed on many different plant species. The species is found on bindweed ( Convolvulus spp.), Ipomoea spp., Nightshade ( Solanum spp.), Tobacco ( Nicotiana spp.), Tomato ( Solanum lycopersicum ), Cissus spp., Lachnopylas spp., Sage ( Salvia spp.), Pycnostachys spp., Tecomaria spp., Kordien ( Cordia spp.), Duranta , Coleus , Losbäumen ( Clerodendron spp.), dahlia ( Dahlia spp.), Lantana ( Lantana spp.), Bignonia , African tulip tree ( Spathodea campanulata ) and Podranea brycei detected.
