Dutch settlers acquired land from the Indians around 1630 and initially set up farms. Due to the favorable location on the Mohawk River and close to the Erie Canal with the possibility of using hydropower, several textile processing companies emerged and the place developed into an important center for this branch of industry. This is why the city still calls itself the "Spindle City" today. Only with the availability of cheaper electrical energy with the help of modern technologies did the number of spinning mills decrease again.

Today Cohoes is home to small and medium-sized industrial companies, is active in tourism and is valued as a quiet residential area with connections to the nearby city of Albany.
