Collegium 1704

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Collegium 1704 is a Czech ensemble that specializes in performing early music in historical performance practice .

history

The orchestra was founded in 1991 by the harpsichordist Václav Luks (* 1970). The mixed choir Collegium vocale 1704 , consisting of almost 20 members, was founded in 2005 as part of the Musikbrücke Prague-Dresden project. It completes the purely instrumental Collegium 1704 and enables the performance of even large vocal works and has thus redefined the repertoire of the ensemble. Václav Luks is also the director of the entire ensemble.

The baroque repertoire, together with the historically informed performance practice, determines the line-up: In addition to the usual string apparatus with 1st and 2nd violins, violas, cellos, woodwinds ( transverse flutes , recorders , oboes, bassoons) and brass ( natural trumpets and horns) as well The timpani is played by the figured bass ( harpsichord or positive organ , cello or viol , theorbo , bass). Some compositions only require part of this complete line-up.

The vocal works Passions ( Matthäuspassion BWV 244 , Johannespassion BWV 245 ) and motets by Johann Sebastian Bach form a focus of the performance program ; also oratorios ( Messiah HWV 56) and opera ( Rinaldo HWV 7 ) Georg Friedrich Handel were several times on the board. Another main focus is on the oeuvre of the Bohemian Baroque composer Jan Dismas Zelenka . The ensemble has performed at the Prague Spring music festivals , Festival de Sablé in Sablé-sur-Sarthe , Festival de La Chaise-Dieu , Festival de Musique de Sully & du Loiret and Saint Wenceslas Music Festival in Ostrava (as Artists in Residence). In addition, the concert series “Music Bridge Prague-Dresden” is one of the main activities of the ensemble; regular concerts in the two cities are reminiscent of the common musical tradition of the royal courts there.

In 2015 the Collegium 1704 Ensemble was in residence at the Leipzig Bach Festival .

The ensemble was also involved in the recording of the film Il Boemo , directed by Petr Václav, about the life of Josef Mysliveček.
