Colosseum was a funeral doom band formed in 2006 . After the death of the singer Juhani Palomäki, the remaining band members decided to break up the group.
history
Singer and guitarist Palomäki founded Colosseum in 2006 out of an effort to create extreme and particularly dark, slow and heavy Doom, which could not be combined with the concept of his previous band Yearning . Together with Olli Haaranen, who took over the recording technology as well as a second guitar, and the bassist Janne Rämö, Palomäki recorded a first demo, which the band sent to various international independent labels . Colosseum signed a contract with Firedoom Musik, a subcontractor of Firebox Records, in 2007 . In the meantime the group was completed with the drummer Sameli Köykkä.
The group recorded their debut Chapter 1: Delirium in May 2007 at D-Studio in Klaukkala . The album was released in November of the same year. Chapter 1: Delirium was mostly positively discussed. Colosseum was occasionally criticized for presenting a more mass-compatible and softer variant of Funeral Doom. On Schwermetall.ch, based on this criticism, the album is referred to as Funeral Gothic Metal .
To promote the album, the group performed in Riga , Liepaja and Finland . The second album would be recorded in the same studio in July of the following year. This time the band brought in studio musicians to the recordings. The cello , violin and trumpet were recorded in the studio. Chapter 2: Numquam was released in January 2009. In the same year, the band's only official music video for Towards the Infinite was released . The second album, like the previous work, was increasingly reviewed as a high-quality release. In part, the album was awarded "Klassikerpotential".
The third album Chapter 3: Parasomnia was recorded soon after, without previous rehearsals, within two weeks in the D-Studio with various studio musicians. A few weeks after the recordings, Palomäki was found dead. The date of death is May 15, 2010; the cause of death was not disclosed. The remaining musicians decided to disband the group, but that the album should appear as Palomäki's last work. After a final mix, in autumn 2010, Chapter 3: Parasomnia was released in March 2011. The album was also considered Palomäki's legacy in reviews and was accordingly highly rated.
style
Reviewers attribute the music of Colosseum either "fully to atmospheric Funeral Doom" or see it as a hybrid style between Gothic Metal and Funeral Doom. According to Vampster , "COLOSSEUM relies on a mixture of Funeral Doom and a high level of melody." There the music is comparatively described as "[less 'Funeral' than TYRANNY and less 'Gothic' than TERHEN " ". On the other hand, Morgion and Evoken are used on Metal-District for comparison .
The music is described on Schwermetall.ch as a typical Funeral Doom mixture of monotonous and slow guitar riffs , which are underlaid with keyboard sequences and mixed with " sacred choirs ". On Vampster, too, “atmospheric synth passages” and a deep and protracted growling are emphasized. The Terrorverlag page also highlights the combination and praises the production of the third studio album, Chapter 3: Parasomnia , which "brings out the heavy riffs of the band as well as the additional integrated strings, brass and choirs."
