Yearning was a Finnish Gothic , Doom and Death Metal band from Riihimäki that was founded in 1994 under the name Flegeton and split up in 2010.

history

The band was formed in late 1994 under the name Flegeton by guitarist and singer Juhani Palomäki and drummer Tony Kristian. The band took the name from the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri , Phlegethon is originally the name of a river in the underworld of Greek mythology . Together they wrote the first songs before Tero Kalliomäki joined the line-up as guitarist. The group then recorded a first demo under the name Through the Desolate Lands . In July 1995 the group went with the bassist Petri “Mr. Woodland “Salo to the MDM Studio in Tampere to record the demo The Temple of Sagal . Through the demo the band got a contract for two albums with the French label Holy Records .

In February 1996 the band, now called Yearning, went to the Tico-Tico Studios in Kemi to record new song material. This resulted in the song Autumn Funeral , which was included on the Holy Records sampler The Holy Bible . From September 16 to 29, 1996, the band returned to this studio to record the album With Tragedies Adorned . The album was released in February 1997. The release was followed by various concerts, before Yearning returned to Tico-Tico Studios on October 19 and 19, 1997 to get a cover version of the Paradise Lost song Eternal for a tribute album by Holy Records. Then the band went on a European tour from December 26th to January 12th, 1998 , with 16 appearances in countries like the Netherlands , Belgium , Germany , Austria , Switzerland and France . Nightfall and SUP also took part in this tour . Then the band wrote new songs before moving to the Tico-Tico Studios from August 18 to September 9, 1998. The result was the second album Plaintive Scenes , which was released in February 1999. In 1999 several members left the band, so that only Palomäki and Kristian were in the band. The former took over all the other instruments in the studio except for the drums, which Kristian continued to play. In the Tico-Tico Studios, the two then recorded the third album Frore Meadow from May 2 to 29, 2000 , which was released in January 2001 on Holy Records. Guitarist Matti S., bassist Jani Loikas and keyboardist Jouni Huttunen joined in for live support. In 2001 the band went on tour through France with label mates Gloomy Grim and Misanthrope . The album Evershade was recorded again in twos . The recordings for this took place in the Astia Studio with co-producer Anssi Kippo from June 9 to 22, 2003, before it was released in September of the same year. This was followed by appearances in Helsinki and Riihimäki in the same live line-up as before. After that, only a few appearances followed, while the band looked for a new label and wrote new songs. In addition, Aki Kuusinen was a new drummer. In 2006 Palomäki founded the Colosseum side project , which debuted in November 2007. Finally, Yearning agreed with Holy Records to release another album. The band then went to the D-Studio in Klaukkala to record the album Merging into Landscapes from March 3 to 23, 2007 with producer Olli Haaranen . The sound carrier was mixed by Jarno Hänninen and mastered by Elektra Mastering in France before it was released in the middle of the year. Then Tiina Sitomaniemi, who had previously been a member of the band and could be heard on Platinitive Scenes , was heard as a guest singer. Another guest singer on this was Tuukka Koskinen from Let Me Dream and Saattue . Juhani Palomäki passed away in May 2010, which meant the end of Yearning.

style

According to Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia , the music on Through the Desolate Lands is cold, gloomy and depressing. The Temple of Sagal offers a mixture of dark and gothic metal. Tragedies Adorned and Plaintive Scenes would border on Progressive Rock .

According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer , Plaintive Scenes has its roots in the Death Metal underground, "but from it blossoms a bouquet of demanding, technically well-performed, theatrically staged melodies". Müller drew a comparison with La Masquerade Infernale by Arcturus . According to Juhani Palomäki in an interview with Müller, however, the band does not even own this album, rather it draws influences from the progressive music of the 1970s and classical music such as the 5th , 7th and 9th symphonies by Ludwig van Beethoven . According to Müller, the songs are orchestral and Palomäki can look back on twelve years of training as a classical guitarist. Palomäki stated that the lyrics are shaped by personal emotions and are therefore a direct result of his mood. In an interview with Claudia Pajzderski from the same magazine, Palomäki stated that Frore Meadow is more melancholy than its predecessors. He also stated again that the lyrics are an expression of his feelings. In his review of With Tragedies Adorned , Müller stated that the album contained orchestral keyboards, "snarling" acoustic guitars, an electric guitar in a minor key , a slow pace and vocals reminiscent of Dan Swanö . He described the music as a mixture of Gothic and Doom metal. In addition, the band occasionally use breaks and "throaty" vocals. On Plaintive Scenes a mixture of gothic and death metal can be heard loud Müller, similar to the music of Tristania . Occasionally, however, guttural singing is still used. However, the music is not a mere sequence of minor riffs , but rather “pearly keyboard melodies with progressive guitar runs are processed into theatrical compositions” and here, too, a comparison is made with the Arcturus album La Masquerade Infernale . According to Pajzderski, Frore Meadow offers "[d] üstere songs, full of sad melodies and melancholy singing". The album offers a mixture of melodic, typical Gothic songs like Bleak and Autumn and experimental songs like the theme song or The Race .
