Carlos Washington Pastor

Carlos Washington Pastor (* 1924 in Villa Mercedes , San Luis Province; † January 9, 2012 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine brigadier general of the Fuerza Aérea Argentina , who served during the military dictatorship under President Jorge Rafael Videla from November 6, 1978 to November 29, 1978. March 1981 was Foreign Minister . During his term of office there were direct negotiations and papal mediations to resolve the Beagle conflict between Argentina and Chile over territorial claims in the Beagle Channel .

Life

After attending school in 1942, Pastor entered the military school (Colegio Militar de la Nación) as an officer candidate and, after specializing in air defense, after the establishment of the air force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina) on January 4, 1945, he became the newly founded Air Force School (Escuela de Aviación Militar) relocated, which he completed at the end of 1945. After several years of service in the 2 hunting regiment (Regimiento 2 de Caza) , he was promoted to first lieutenant and in 1951 to captain .

In the following years foreign assignments took place in the United Kingdom and was promoted to major in 1956 . After the establishment of the US space agency NASA in 1958, he was assigned to participate in the local space program and, on his return, was commander of Jagdgruppe 3 (Grupo 3 de Caza) and then, as a lieutenant colonel, commander of the Rivadavia air force command. After completing a course at the General Staff Academy (Escuela de Comando y Estado Mayor) , he was promoted to colonel in 1965 .

In November 1970, Pastor was promoted to brigadier general and as such took over the management of the Air Force Personnel Department before being retired from active military service a few years later.

During the Argentine military dictatorship, he was appointed Foreign Minister (Ministro de Relaciones Exteriores) by President Jorge Rafael Videla on November 6, 1978 as the successor to Vice-Admiral Oscar Antonio Montes and held this office until his replacement by Oscar Camilión on March 29, 1981 after the Appointed by Roberto Eduardo Viola president of the military junta.

During his tenure there were direct negotiations with Chile and later papal mediation attempts to settle the Beagle conflict between Argentina and Chile over territorial claims in the Beagle Channel. He was related to President Videla as his wife, María Isabel Hartridge, was a sister of Videla's wife, Alicia Raquel Hartridge.
