Location of the Columbia Township in the far east of Lorain County

Columbia Township , also known as Columbia Station or just Columbia , is the easternmost of the eighteen townships of Lorain County , Ohio , United States . Columbia Township is the official name, while Columbia Station is used for postal purposes as there are several townships called Columbia in Ohio. The post name was chosen to distinguish the township from the Columbia Townships in Hamilton County and Meigs County . Should the township become its own community, it will probably be called Columbia Station. However, there are currently no parishes in the township. At the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 6,912 people living in 2,452 residences.

history

Columbia Township was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve . The townships that were measured here had a length and width of 5 miles (around 8 kilometers) each and not, as is usual in neighboring US states, a length and width of 6 miles (9.7 kilometers) each. In 1805, two years after Ohio became the 17th state of the USA, the federal government achieved through treaties with the Indian tribes in this area that the area west of the Cuyahoga River could also be settled. The Bronson and Hoadley families from Waterbury, Connecticut , pooled their savings to buy an entire township. They picked out Township 5 N, Row 15 W and bought it on April 7, 1807 for $ 20,087 without seeing it before.

The two families were thus among the first settlers west of the Cuyahoga River and Columbia Township is the longest permanent inhabited area in this area by white settlers. Therefore, Columbia Township can also offer other unique selling points: The first classroom west of the Cuyahoga was set up here in 1808, Sally Bronson was the first teacher here. The first child outside a Native American family was Sally Hoadley in 1809. The first cemetery was established in 1811 and the first Episcopal Church congregation was established here in 1809.

Natural park

The Lorain County Metro Parks Administration opened the Columbia Reservation in Columbia Township in 2003 . A 166 hectare wetland nature reserve on 115 hectares in the floodplain of the Rocky River . There are 5 kilometers of paths here, on which you can hike between marshes , ponds, wet meadows and swamps . The area is particularly popular with ornithologists because there are more than 50 species of birds, including the great blue heron ( Ardea herodias ). There are plans to expand the park by another 32 hectares.
