Columbus Circle (New York)
The Columbus Circle (Columbus Circle) is a larger place in New York City . It is located at the intersection of Broadway , Central Park West , Central Park South ( 59th Street ) and Eighth Avenue on the southwest corner of Central Park in Manhattan .
The roundabout was designed by William Phelps Eno , a businessman known for a variety of road safety inventions. The plaza was part of Frederick Law Olmsted's vision of a park that included a circular plaza at its entrance on Eighth Avenue. The construction was completed in 1905.
Then as now, Columbus Circle is an important traffic junction. Bus routes M5, M7, M10, M20, and M104 stop at the square, as do routes A, B, C, D, and 1 of the New York Subway .
Named after Christopher Columbus , the monument was erected in 1892 as a contribution to the New York Memorial Day of the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America. The monument, a so-called Columna rostrata , was financed from funds raised by an Italian daily newspaper (Il Progresso) . The statue consists of a marble statue that stands on a granite column about 20 meters high . The column is decorated with bronze rusts , which represent the ships of Columbus, Niña , Pinta and Santa María . The foot is formed by an angel holding a globe . The monument is the official measuring point from which all distances to and from New York City are calculated.
Renovation work on the square was completed in 2005, a fountain was added, wooden benches and plantings around the monument. The inner space measures around 3,330 m², the outer space around 14,000 m².
The Time Warner Center , the world headquarters of the Warner Media group, is located directly on the west side of Columbus Circle . The complex also houses the New York headquarters of the news channel CNN . The Trump International Hotel and Tower is directly on the north side .
