Comalies is the third album by the Italian alternative metal band Lacuna Coil . The album was released on September 23, 2002 via Century Media . Comalies has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide, making it the best-selling album in Century Media's history.

History of origin

As with the two previous albums, the songs for Comalies were created shortly before the start of recording. According to singer Cristina Scabbia, the album title is a kind of reflection on this time.

“I felt like I was in a coma while we were writing these songs. The outside world no longer existed, all our energy was directed towards ourselves, so that the air was filled with a creative tension. "

- Cristina Scabbia

In contrast to the previous album Unleashed Memories , the band relied on simply arranged songs that contain fewer riffs and vocals. The band wanted to achieve more with less effort. The recordings for Comalies took place in April and May 2002 at Woodhouse Studios in Hagen . The album was again produced by Waldemar Sorychta . Music videos were shot for the two singles "Heaven´sa Lie" and "Swamped" .

background

"Heaven's a Lie" is about people who want to bring their opinions and points of view closer to other people with all their might. The word "Heaven" (Engl. For sky ) is used here as a metaphor used. The song caused irritation, especially in the USA, as the song was often considered an anti-religious song. "Daylight Dancer" describes a strong person who believes in himself. The title "The Ghost Woman and the Hunter" comes from an Indian legend that deals with the subject of envy . "Angel's Punishment" is dedicated to the victims of all wars in the world.

The songs "Self Deception" and the theme song are related to the song "When a Dead Man Walks" from the previous album Unleashed Memories . "When a Dead Man Walks" is about a man who is serving his sentence in prison, but the reason for the sentence is not clear. “Self Deception”, on the other hand, describes the situation of a murderer who has an accomplice in his act . The text of the theme song "Comalies" was written from the point of view of this accomplice.

“Aeon”, the acoustic intro to “Tight Rope”, contains an intentionally built-in jump. The band pointed this out on their homepage after many irritated buyers had complained that the CD was defective. For the song "Tight Rope", the band took a sample from the PC game Descent . The computer voice says "self destruct sequence activated" (in German: "self-destruct sequence activated!").

reception

The album received good reviews from the trade press. The German magazine Metal Hammer named Comalies “Album of the Month” with an average rating of 5.08 out of seven possible points. The German magazine Rock Hard also voted Comalies “Album of the Month”. Wolfgang Schäfer mentioned in his review that the album is overflowing with listening tips and he recommended it to buy without hesitation.

Comalies has been sold over half a million times worldwide. Of these, over 250,000 were in the USA, where the album reached number 178 in the album charts. The album reached number 45 in Germany and number 69 in France.

Versions

In addition to the regular CD version, a limited box was released containing the album in a digipak with a bonus song ( Lost Lullaby ), video recordings from the studio and a poster of the singer Cristina Scabbia.

In 2004 the album was re-released. Due to the many tours in the USA, the demand increased by leaps and bounds. The re-release contains a bonus CD with nine songs, consisting of two radio versions, four acoustic versions recorded in the studio and three songs that the band recorded acoustically in the studio of the radio station WAAF.
