Shallow Life ( Engl . For mindless life ) is the fifth studio album by the Italian alternative band Lacuna Coil . It was released on April 17, 2009 via Century Media .
Emergence
In an interview with the British magazine “Kerrang!” The singer Cristina Scabbia announced that the band would like to experiment with their new album and try new things. In early 2008, the band began working on the new song material. As with the first album, the members tried to create the songs through jam sessions after the previous albums were more or less created on the computer . The ideas of the band members were put together in the rehearsal room and processed into new songs. Overall, the band spent every day in the rehearsal room for a period of six months.
For the recordings, the band put together a list of three dream producers. The choice fell on Don Gilmore, who has previously worked with bands and artists such as Linkin Park , Avril Lavigne and Duran Duran . The band traveled to NRG Studios in Los Angeles in September 2008 for the recording . It was the first time that Lacuna Coil recorded an album outside of Europe .
In their hometown of Milan , the band shot a music video for the first single "Spellbound". The recordings took place in the restaurant "Gold", which belongs to the fashion company Dolce & Gabbana . The company provided the band with clothing for the filming.

Shallow Life is the first concept album in the band's history. All the songs on the album deal with the superficiality of today's society and the dissatisfaction that goes with it. The album cover is decorated with a hand grenade , the body of which consists of a perfume bottle .

In “Not Enough” Scabbia and Ferro sing past each other and act as a couple who cheat on each other. "I Like It" is about a stalker . However, the victim only indirectly tells the perpetrator that she does not like his act.
reception
For the most part, Shallow Life has been well received by the trade press. According to Marius Mutz from the online magazine Metal1.info , the band managed "the balancing act between catchy and atmospheric songs brilliantly and convincingly", but criticized that "there are some unmotivated songs in the second half of the album". He awarded eight out of ten points. Timo Beisel from the online magazine Metalnews.de described Shallow Life as a “really strong album, even if not every song can convince” and gave the album six out of seven points.
Michael Hauptmann from the online magazine Bloodchamber, on the other hand, compared Shallow Life with "a Ferrari that only has 90 hp under the bonnet" and awarded six out of ten points.
