Comber Abbey (Cumber; Comerium; Irish Mainistir an Chomair ) is a former Cistercian abbey in Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom . It was located in County Down in the town of Comber about 15 km east-southeast of Belfast at the site of the present church of the Church of Ireland, built from 1840 onwards .
history
The monastery was probably founded in 1200 by Brian Catha Dúin as a daughter monastery of Whitland Abbey in Wales and thus belonged to the filiation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1543 the monastery was closed. The last abbot was John O'Mullegan. In 1573 the monastery was burned down.
Buildings and plant
There are no remains of the monastery. Archaeological investigations are not considered to be very promising because of the new church building in 1840.
