Compuerta is a town in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .

Location in the vicinity

Along with the capital Tarija and the urban municipality of Portillo, Compuerta is the only non-urban village in the canton of Tarija in the municipality of Tarija in the province of Cercado . The city is located on the left, eastern bank of the Río Nuevo Guadalquivir , which bears the name Río Tarija downstream below Tarija after joining the Río Camacho .

Compuerta is conveniently located between the different climate zones of the country on the edge of the Andes , so that mostly mild and pleasant weather prevails (see climate diagram Tarija). In the rainy season between December and February (summer months) there are frequent torrential thunderstorms. The rest of the year is extremely low in precipitation.

The landscape has been eroded by the centuries of clearing and the region around Tarija is framed by bare mountain ranges. The area around Tarija used to be Bolivia's grain chamber. Today, in addition to agriculture, the region is rich in natural gas .

Transport network

Compuerta is six kilometers by road north of Tarija , the capital of the department.

The highway Ruta 1 runs through Tarija in a south-north direction, which leads from Bermejo on the border with Argentina via Tarija, Potosí , Oruro and El Alto to Lake Titicaca and the border with Peru .

Four kilometers north of the city center of Tarija, the Ruta 1 crosses the Río Nuevo Guadalquivir in a north-westerly direction, and shortly before that, a secondary road turns off the Ruta 1 in a northerly direction, which continues via Compuerta to San Mateo and Monte Centro .
