history

Conćon was first mentioned by Don Pedro de Valdivia when he began to build a railway line from Santiago to Valparaíso in 1851 . Although the town was mentioned in the original plans, the final route was moved by Quilpué due to the sandy soil in Concón .

On August 21, 1891, the "Battle of Concón" took place, the decisive military battle in the Chilean civil war between supporters of the Congress and supporters of President José Manuel Balmacedas . The outcome of the civil war in Chile marked the end of the presidential system of government in favor of a parliamentary one.

Concón was made a town in 1899, the place previously belonged to the municipality of Limache. In 1927 Concón was incorporated into Viña del Mar as a district, but has been recognized as an independent town again since December 28, 1995 and has its own mayor.

Since the early 20th century, Concón has established itself as a holiday resort mainly for the residents of Santiago.

On December 12, 2006, Chile's former dictator Augusto Pinochet was cremated in Concón in Parque del Mar. His ashes were given to the family for fear of vandalism.
