history

The Confederation of African Rugby (French: Confédération Africaine de Rugby , CAR) was founded in January 1986 in the Tunisian capital Tunis . The founding members were Tunisia, Morocco , Senegal , the Ivory Coast , Tanzania , Kenya , the Seychelles and Madagascar . After the end of apartheid , the South African Rugby Union (SARU) joined in July 1992 , by far the largest association on the continent. In 1998, CAR held its first competition, qualifying for the 1999 World Cup . The first African Championship followed two years later . Based on the concept of the Pacific Islanders , the CAR created its own multinational selection team, the African Leopards, in 2005 . In December 2014 the CAR renamed itself Rugby Africa (French Rugby Afrique ).
