Liza Minnelli, who stood out primarily as an interpreter of musical songs and pop standards with great orchestral accompaniment, specialized on this album in the ballad-like processing of jazz standards by several composers and songwriters of the Great American Songbook . This time the instrumental accompaniment was provided by the pianist Billy Stritch , who had worked with Minnelli for many years; Sometimes a rhythm section also played.
The album was advertised under the aspect that Minnelli was a sensitive singer with an emphasis on the intention of the individual songs. The statements of the songwriters should be in the foreground. Minnelli distanced herself from her energetic, dynamic interpretation. She herself described the songs she recorded as her favorite and most intimate, which she had previously only sung privately in front of friends and acquaintances.
Most of the technical criticism criticized Minnelli's fragile voice, which sometimes no longer does justice to the melodies. In addition, the recording of the two songs I Got Lost in His Arms and Close Your Eyes, which had already been made for her studio album Gently (1996), was rated as not exactly original or creative. As the music critic John Bush notes, however, Minnelli ignores the negative voices and, despite her vocal weaknesses, gets everything out of herself without necessarily taking herself seriously.
