background

There was a total of 21 months between the release of their second studio album It Amazes Me and There Is a Time . During this time, Liza Minnelli profiled as an actress in the Broadway - Musical Flora the Red Menace and television production The Dangerous Christmas of Red Riding Hood , both of which were also recorded as albums. In addition, Minnelli began a second career as a nightclub singer in September 1965. In this regard, she was particularly encouraged by her mentor Charles Aznavour, who taxed the title song of the same name and the medley Love at Last / You Have Found Me for There Is a Time . Several songs were written by French-speaking chansonniers, in addition to Charles Aznavour himself, among others, by Jacques Brel . With See the Old Man , a song by Minnelli's regular composers John Kander and Fred Ebb found its way into the album. I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise , originally from the 1920s, comes from the film An American in Paris and The Parisians from the soundtrack of the musical adaptation Gigi .

reception

Like all of his previous albums except Liza! Liza! managed There Is a Time not there in the charts. Music critic William Ruhlmann attributes Liza Minnelli's commercial failure as a recording artist primarily to the British Invasion , the spread of contemporary rock , soul , and rhythm and blues music brought to the United States by British artists such as the Rolling Stones and Dusty Springfield got. However, Ruhlmann emphasizes the artistic value of the album, which was clearly created under European musical influences. Overall, the romantic and harmonious work underlines Liza Minnelli's talent as a singer and entertainer. The Hi-Fi / Stereo Review Magazine honored the LP as "Best Album of the Year".
