Results is a studio album by Liza Minnelli . It was written in London from April 18-22, 1989 and was published on October 11, 1989.

background

The album is based on synth pop , whose leading representatives in the 1980s were the Pet Shop Boys , who were also responsible for the production of this album. Originally they only wanted to record a single song with Liza Minnelli, but they had so much fun working together that an entire album was created. Minnelli changed her styling to promote the album and appeared more youthful, she also shot video clips for the individual single releases. With the songs Losing My Mind and Love Pains Minnelli appeared in the popular BBC music show Top of the Pops in 1989 and 1990 and also completed a promotional tour through Europe.

Seven of the ten songs were written by the two Pet Shop Boys Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant ; Rent and Tonight Is Forever were already recorded by the Pet Shop Boys for their albums Please (1986) and Actually (1987). Losing My Mind was taken from Stephen Sondheim's musical The Follies . Twist in My Sobriety actually comes from folk singer Tanita Tikaram ; it is included on their 1988 album Ancient Heart . Love Pains comes from Yvonne Elliman's album Yvonne from 1979.

Results was a huge hit in the UK, where it reached number 6 on the album charts. It was in contrast to sales in the United States, where Results only made it to number 128 on the Billboard album charts. The album was led by the single Losing My Mind , which landed at number 6 in the UK and number 11 in the US dance charts.

Remarks

In the outro of If There Was Love , Liza Minnelli recites William Shakespeare's Sonnet 94 .

reception

The reviews of the album varied. The Guardian described it as "the refined quintessence of modern pop technology, imbued with significant music theater tradition" and the Los Angeles Times as "one of the most fascinating albums of the year" with "dark, moody ballads and dark, moody dance songs". Co-producer Neil Tennant himself considered Results in a 1996 interview as "possibly the best album" by the Pet Shop Boys.

The music critic William Ruhlmann sums up that - even if previous albums have been commercially successful - the recording of studio albums has never been Liza Minnelli's top priority, as she invested more time in her career as a stage singer and entertainer. With her musical roots anchored in traditional pop, she would have dared to venture into contemporary, rocky realms, but not with all her heart. The live recording of her concert in New York's Carnegie Hall in 1987 finally re-established her as a singer. For Minnelli's die-hard fans, Results are now difficult to understand. Here she ventures into a completely different musical direction, influenced by the electronic synthesizer sounds of the British Pet Shop Boys. Losing My Mind , a musical song by Stephen Sondheim, was able to form the basis for a completely different album; here, mixed as a dance song, it almost sounds like Laura Branigan's song Gloria from 1982. Results is more of a Pet Shop Boys album than a Liza Minnelli vehicle, and both parties have, despite their great success in Great Britain well done to go their own way again.
