It Amazes Me is Liza Minnelli's second studio album . It was recorded in December 1964 and January 1965 and was released in March 1965. His songs are included in full on the compilation The Complete Capitol Collection (2006).

background

Just like with her first studio album Liza! Liza! Minnelli recorded musical songs and jazz standards by lyricists and composers such as George Gershwin , Lorenz Hart , Richard Rodgers , Cole Porter . Once again, Peter Matz was responsible for the arrangements and recording management. The tracks also include a contemporary song by Broadway duo John Kander and Fred Ebb ( Plenty of Time ), who wrote the musical Flora the Red Menace , in which Minnelli made her Broadway debut in April 1965. I Never Have Seen Snow , written by Harold Arlen and Truman Capote as I Never Has Seen Snow , comes from their musical House of Flowers from 1954, which had turned out to be a big artistic flop at the time.

  1. Wait Til You See Him ( Lorenz Hart , Richard Rodgers ) - 2:47

reception

Since her first LP, Scott Schechter (Liza Minnelli's biographer) has developed her performance skills, which can be seen here in the songs I Never Have Seen Snow and Plenty of Time . The orchestral accompaniment is more sumptuous and the sound quality is higher than in the previous work.

Music critic William Ruhlmann calls Liza Minnelli " Barbra Streisand's little sister" because of her musical style . She was gradually breaking away from just sounding like a younger version of her mother Judy Garland . Arranger Peter Matz is apparently in love with the melodies of old Broadway songwriters; here, however, he did not select her better-known songs for recording. Minnelli feels more comfortable with the more contemporary compositions (although also written by Broadway copywriters); the classical standards often sound wrong, even though Minnelli sings exactly as it is prescribed. More up-to-date songs, for example Ebbs and Kander's Plenty of Time, are clearly more believable.
