Liza with a 'Z'. A Concert for Television (often just Liza with a 'Z' ) is a special from the US television station NBC from 1972. The focus of this show is the US singer and actress Liza Minnelli , who starred in the same year her leading role in the musical film Cabaret celebrated her international breakthrough. The show was conceived on the music of the cabaret creators John Kander and Fred Ebb . Direction and choreography was carried out by Bob Fosse , who was responsible for the Broadway musical Cabaret (1966/67) and its filming. The broadcast can be assigned to the genres of personality show and concert film .

Television broadcast

Liza Minnelli's performance was filmed on May 31, 1972 at the Lyceum Theater in New York and broadcast on NBC on September 10, 1972 under the slogan as "the first concert ever filmed on television".

Liza with a 'Z' differed from other TV specials in that it was actually just a live concert. Its staging, which was unusual at the time, made it into the history of US television.

Liza Minnelli, who presented herself in various creations by the fashion designer Halston during the concert , advanced to become a pop culture media icon with this show. She was the first person to appear on the covers of Time and Newsweek magazines simultaneously on the same day . During her performances she was accompanied by several background singers, dancers, two guitarists, a keyboard player and a drummer. The musical coordinator was Marvin Hamlisch .

The show received unanimous rave reviews, but only aired twice on US television after 1973.
