Congleton was a district with borough status in the county of Cheshire in England , which was named after the city of Congleton . However, the administrative seat was Sandbach . Other important places were Alsager , Holmes Chapel and Middlewich .
The district was formed on April 1, 1974 and was created from the merger of the original Borough of Congleton , the Urban Districts Alsager and Middlewich and the Rural Districts Sandbach and Congleton. On April 1, 2009 it was dissolved due to a territorial and administrative reform and went into the new Unitary Authority Cheshire East .
